Overview

Priests are vanilla's premier healers, packing shields, heal-over-time, and powerful group heals, plus a full Shadow tree for ranged damage. Each race gets a unique priest racial spell. They wear cloth and run on mana.

Specializations

DisciplineSupport / Healer

Mana efficiency and buffs like Power Infusion and Inner Focus; great for PvP survivability and utility.

HolyHealer

Maximizes healing output and spirit (Spiritual Guidance, Spirit of Redemption). The main raid-healing build.

ShadowRanged DPS

Shadowform, Mind Flay, Vampiric Embrace and Shadow Weaving turn the Priest into a DoT and ranged-DPS machine.

Signature abilities

Power Word: ShieldAbsorbs incoming damage - the signature Priest spell.
RenewA heal-over-time you can cast and forget.
Greater Heal / Flash HealBig and fast direct heals.
Prayer of HealingGroup heal for your whole party.
ResurrectionBring a dead player back (out of combat).
Mind Blast / SW:Pain / Mind FlayThe Shadow damage core.

  • Dwarf (Alliance) - Fear Ward is huge in raids (Onyxia, BWL) and PvP; Stoneform too.
  • Night Elf (Alliance) - Elune's Grace and Shadowmeld; Starshards.
  • Undead (Horde) - Will of the Forsaken (fear/charm immunity) - the best PvP racial.
  • Troll (Horde) - Berserking speeds up healing/casting when hurt.

⚠️ Weaknesses

  • Cloth-squishy in melee
  • Mana management matters a lot
  • Raid healing can be reactive and stressful
  • Shadow is utility DPS, not top parses

Tips for Priests

  • Level as Shadow for solo killing power (Shadowform around level 40).
  • Keep Power Word: Shield and Renew rolling to pull and survive.
  • Use Wand damage to conserve mana while leveling.
  • In raids, pre-shield the tank and top up with Renew.
